Bangladesh Witnesses Surge in Lightning Deaths Linked to Climate Change
On what should have been a day of celebration for Mamun, marking his wedding, tragedy struck as lightning claimed the lives of 16 of his relatives en route to the ceremony. Dressed in their finest attire, the family sought shelter from a storm under a tin shed on a riverbank when the lightning struck. Mamun's heartbreaking loss is not isolated, as Bangladesh faces a significant increase in lightning-related deaths, with an annual average of 300, a stark contrast to the United States' fewer than 20 deaths with nearly double the population.
This surge in lightning fatalities places a heavy burden on the nation, compounded by extreme weather and frequent storms. Bangladesh has become particularly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, contributing to the rise in deadly lightning strikes.
