Ukraine war: Russia hits back after Kyiv attack on border city

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia escalated significantly with a fresh wave of Russian air strikes targeting various locations, primarily concentrating on the eastern city of Kharkiv. These strikes came in response to Ukrainian attacks on Belgorod, a Russian border city, resulting in at least 24 casualties. Russia claimed it utilized high-precision missiles to target military installations in Kharkiv, alleging a direct retaliation for the strikes on Belgorod.

However, Ukraine contested Russia's assertions, maintaining that no military facilities were hit in Kharkiv. Instead, Ukrainian authorities argued that Russia deliberately struck civilian infrastructure, causing substantial damage. Among the reported damages were 12 blocks of flats, 13 homes, hospitals, a hotel building, a kindergarten, commercial premises, a gas pipeline, and cars. Kharkiv's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, emphasized that these were not military facilities but rather cafes, residences, and offices. Despite the destruction, local authorities expressed resilience, stating that the city remained unbroken and invincible.

Ukraine's air force reported a successful defense against Russian drones, destroying 21 out of 49 launched overnight. The majority of these attacks were aimed at regions including Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Zaporizhzhia. Additionally, air defense systems around Kyiv were engaged in repelling a Russian drone attack.

In response to these developments, Ukraine's interior ministry reported 28 people injured in Kharkiv due to at least six missiles hitting the city near the Russian border. The casualties included damages to residential areas, hospitals, a hotel building, a kindergarten, commercial premises, a gas pipeline, and cars.

Simultaneously, the conflict saw damages in the southern region of Kherson, where two people were reported killed by Russian shelling. The situation on the ground remains dire, with civilians caught in the crossfire and infrastructure sustaining severe blows.

This recent surge in violence follows a deadly couple of days in the region, with Russia conducting massive bombardments across Ukraine, resulting in dozens of casualties and nearly 160 injuries. Ukrainian authorities have pointed to these attacks as the most substantial missile bombardment since the beginning of the war.

The toll of the conflict continues to rise, with both military and civilian casualties mounting. The situation remains fluid and highly concerning, prompting international attention and calls for de-escalation.
